ACTIon in MUMBAI

SFLG's Chief Executive Officer, Clare McIntosh travelled to Mumbai last week after the 21st International Leprosy Congress in Hyderabad. She was accompanied by SFLG's newly appointed Programme Manager, Charlotte John.

The purpose of the trip was to meet two Active Case-Finding partners, ALERT India and Bombay Leprosy Programme. After the success of the ACF programme's interim results, presented last week at the ILC, year-2 funding will be given to both partners.

Speaking from Mumbai, SFLG's CEO, Clare McIntosh said:

I am delighted to have the chance to meet two of our six partners who work with us in our Active-Case Finding programme.

Both ALERT India and Bombay Leprosy Project work with the most marginalised and disadvantaged people on earth. ALERT works in the leprosy endemic Palghar District of Maharashtra. Bombay Leprosy Programme works in the Dharavi Slums of Mumbai.

I shall soon see their work in action for myself.

Bombay Leprosy Project (India) is an NGO founded by the eminent leprologist, Dr R Ganapati, who transformed leprosy work from a closed institutionalised approach to a widespread community-based intervention. The project with SFLG increases awareness of leprosy in the Dharavi slums of Mumbai and encourage active community life. This project trains and engages with local community volunteers who conduct door-to-door awareness campaigns.

SFLG’s TRACE operating strategy is putting an emphasis on Active Case-Finding; early detection of leprosy followed by treatment with multidrug therapy, reflecting new global approaches in the ongoing fight against leprosy. SFLG has six Active Case-Finding projects in operation with three more due to start in 2023.

The start of the Programme was announced last year and our partners activities include the following:
Door-to-door skin surveys or assessment
Skin surveys in schools
Community-based skin camps
Contact tracing
Referral to hospital or clinic
