Pope Leo XIV appoints Bishop Richard Moth as the new Archbishop of Westminster
Friday 19 December 2025: the Vatican announced that Pope Leo XIV has appointed Bishop Richard Moth as the new Roman Catholic Archbishop of Westminster. He will succeed Cardinal Vincent Nichols. Archbishop-elect Moth, formerly Bishop of Arundel and Brighton, will be installed on February 14, 2026. He will become the spiritual leader for Catholics in England and Wales.
SFLG's Chair, Edward Reed said: "On behalf of the Trustees of St Francis Leprosy Guild, we would like to pay tribute to Cardinal Vincent Nichols and thank him for his support as our patron." He continued: "I am honoured to extend our warmest congratulations to the Archbishop-elect on his appointment. I would like to assure him of our prayers as he prepares to take up this new ministry."
It has been customary for the Archbishop to serve as Patron of St Francis Leprosy Guild.
Archbishop-elect Moth will become the 12th Archbishop of Westminster, succeeding Cardinal Vincent Nichols, who has served in the role since 2009. Cardinal Nichols will now become Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Westminster until Archbishop-elect Moth is installed at Westminster Cathedral on Saturday, 14 February 2026.
The former Bishop of Arundel and Brighton, was Principal Celebrant at SFLG's 127th Annual Mass held on Friday 4 November, at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Mount Street, London, W1. During the service, the Bishop preached on the life of St Charles Borromeo and how this unlikely saint had influenced the work of St Francis Leprosy Guild.
