Facts about Leprosy

THAILAND: A Happy Home....

St. Joseph's home in Khon Kaen.... cares for a group of 18 elderly folk, most of whom suffer or have suffered from Leprosy. There is also a Day Care Centre for a further 25 people. The following extracts from their Activity report for 1999 give some idea of the support provided to leprosy sufferers by projects such as this all over the world, with the help of St. Francis Leprosy Guild.

Khon Kaen: Celebrating the last Christmas of the Millennium... "At St. Joseph's Home, the visitor will see many of these Special People still finding ways to serve others in works as well as prayers. Even though many lovely, sunlit areas are provided for them to rest and relax, the Residents who are able are not content to retire from their lives of service. Despite their physical constraints, they find ways to contribute and bring joy to others."

"Medical Care. The Grannies at St. Joseph's all took part in the yearly lung, blood exam and leprosy checkup at the Provincial Health Centre. The Home continues to render free wound dressings and assist clients who need hospitalisation. A number of residents were sent to the Leprosy Regional Hospital for skin wounds and wound ulcers."

"Occupational Activities. The Centre continues to assist its clients to be self-reliant. A group of elderly at the Nonsumbun were organised to open a fertiliser co-operative. Another group of ten is into sugar cane projects which are prospering and have a good future. A further group of ten are into bamboo bed making. The duck projects are having bad experience due to robbers from the neighbourhood. The suspects were drug addicts residing near the home. Hopefully, we can find funds to make the fence higher."

"Ongoing Spiritual and Human Formation. During the years, residents of St. Joseph's and the day care clients are fortunate to receive one formal catechetical session every week. Our Pastor of Bannoi comes once a month to provide formation for residents and staff. Twice during the year health workers, medical and and nursing students from the Khonkaen University came to give health education. They also had a chance of listening to Buddha's teaching preached by a monk of the Buddist temple."

"Celebration and thanks. To St. Francis Leprocy Guild, our mother sponsors in the Leprosy programme, we thank you for all the love of a life time experiences of the 20th century."
