Pope urges fight against leprosy
...
Sunday January 30th 2000 was proclaimed "World Day for Leprosy Sufferers". Lending the occasion his support, Pope John Paul II spoke to an audience of thousands gathered below his window in St Peter's Square including many health workers from around the world.
"These are people toward whom the Church, following the example of Jesus Christ, has always devoted a special attention," the Pope said, reminding his listeners of the frequent references in the New Testament to Jesus healing victims of leprosy. "I embrace all the brothers and sisters who suffer from Hansen's disease and renew my wish that they, in this Holy Year, can experience the healing force of solidarity."
Pope John Paul has made a point of focusing the papal spotlight on leprosy, embracing leprosy patients on a visit to Cuba two years ago and even more recently denouncing what to many victims are the unaffordably high costs of medicine to treat it.
