Visit To Anandwan, India
Mr Donald Sammut and his team (from Bristol) re-visited Anandwan
from the 15th to the 24th October 2005. A total of 24 cases of fairly
major surgery were dealt with. Fifteen of these were leprosy patients,
many with burns. Some were from Anandwan, others were from much
further afield. They included several children with serious finger
and toe deformities, as well as severe scarring from burns contractures.
Due to limited time and complexity of operations, many others had
to be postponed, but will be attended to next visit. Results were
satisfactory, enabling the patients to lead normal productive lives.
Sir Harold Hood Bt, TD, GCSG (RIP)
The Guild would like to pay tribute to his remarkable commitment
to theGuild, spanning nearly seventy years. He joined the Guild
in 1936 at the age of 20 and was President for 26 years from 1960
until 1986 when he was 70. Sir Harold remained a member of our
Executive Committee until 1999, when his arthritis became too
painful. He then continued as a generous Patron until his death.
The world of leprosy, so often associated with stigma, was fortunate
to have his life-long support and Harold himself was delighted
that his younger daughter took his place on the Executive Committee,
thus continuing the family tradition begun by his mother. We shall
miss him. May he rest in peace.
