Kasempa, Zambia had special
grants last year. Father Gandara
writes:
“The ‘one lima’ (quarter acre) project has managed to empower the leprosy people. All of them cultivated beans and cassava last year, and the most healthy even goundnuts. This year all of them cultivated beans and cassava with the seeds of last year. It was not easy to convince them to set apart some beans for seed and some branches of cassava for planting.
The four students did well in their studies. John completed grade 12, Golden and Mubinga completed grade 11 and Exilda completed grade 10. All of them did well. I hope next year you will include them in the grant. The car has been really a blessing for all our work with the leprosy people. Sometimes we have to go far to buy maize, sometimes we have to go to town to bring sugar or cooking oil, every week we help them to go to hospital. It has been a big relief for us. Honestly speaking I don’t have enough words to thank you for coming to our help.”

After years of civil war, the women’s ward at the Rehabilitation Centre is in a sorry state. Roof, masonry, floors all need replacing. The work is being phased and we have sent a grant for a new roof. Sister Patricia says ‘Providence comes drop by drop and this is a big drop!’ She sends grateful thanks. We hope to be able to finance the second phase once the roof is completed.
